- Conventional linear logic requires that before
solutions be designed they must FIRST must stay
within the norms of correctness and ideals that
were laid down by historical norms. Today the
extreme diversity and disparity within society
has varied social attitudes. This negates the
logic of norm based definitions for correctness
or ideals. With changing values and above all
‘special interest groups’- we can
no longer use “norms” as guidelines
for solutions design. (NLT does not
profess or seek any violation of the Law it
does not dwell on the historical measure as
referance to right or wrong when considering
solutions design).
- This may seem blasphemous to many; but“when
the objective is to find solutions within complexity”
moralizing or agonizing over deviation from
past norms is irrelevant. In a Non Linear era,
solutions are already known to most recurring
problems & identifying implementation strategies
should become the primary objective. In a linear
era the focus was on the analyses of the problem,
which was considered to be the primary input
to develop the best suited solution design.
Then experts with experience would provide a
well known or documented solution design based
on ‘similar problems’documented
from the past.
Today problems ‘develop and occur’
based on their own ‘timing and cause'.Experts
are increasingly unable to help because A NEW
circumstance & new environment demand a different
solution even if the problem appears to be similar
to some past event.
The ability to put solutions into action now requires
a greater skill because “conflict”
and “opposition” comes from
focussed 'special interest groups' who have become
an integral part of complexity, especially in
mature democracies.
- Linear logic based solutions based their
solution design to attack at the very “core”
of the problem and aggressively push aside any
conflict based on the strength of the logic.
This is no longer practical. Using Non Linear
Thinking and logic we need to develop solutions
that first “erode” and
“overcome” the opposition
that exists to change .
- The Non Linear solution may first focus on
overcoming or even sidelining the core; thus
making opposition redundant through strategy.
Within complexity it is usually necessary to
restore or change the environment - before attempting
to solve the “real” problem. ( In
marketing many refer to this as repositioning
the opposition before making change ourselves).
In the linear past, new problems usually required
new resources and this was logical and affordable
based on the low frequency of “NEWSIT”!
( see 'When do we need
NLT' )
- Today and in future and especially for us
in South Asia and India, we cannot assume that
we will create or make available new resources
for every New problem. REPRIORITISATION of existing
resources will thus need to become the principal
skill and expertise that is required for good
solutions design.
We need skills that develop and design solutions
without need to base them on past norms or ideals.
The focus must also be to initiate the required
change with minimal conflict as special interest
groups now form the main deterrent to implementation
of even the ‘best prefferred’ solution.
Being able to commence the process with minimal
conflict is more important than solving the
assumed problem.
CONFLICT is the key deterrent
to all progress and specifically economic growth
… Linear logic now aggravates conflict.
- Wherever there is an absence of consensus
or disagreement. Society seems unable to identify
any management skill or strategic tool besides
conflict to ‘resolve’ the
issue. Linear logic fails because it implies
that someone must be the ‘winner’
and therefore there must be a ‘loser'.
- Today in the Non Linear era & within “Conflict”,
there is rarely a winner or a loser. The result
of a conflict in any sphere - whether in markets,
economics, social or emotional now povides –
the same result where there is a “loss”
for all involved.
- In the past - the aggressor had to be the
one with the greater economic resource and a
huge arsenal to wage war. Today it is the “peace
keeper” that is required to be the
strongest. In this Non Linear era conflict is
sparked by an individual or small group who
become the aggressors using a “minimal”
resource. War based on terrorism has little
or no concern for damage or ethics and HENCE
cannot be fought by armies trained for conventional
war.
- Linear logic based training were based on
teaching our defence personnel to “fight
the unseen enemy who was the unknown one”.
Today in our Non Linear era the enemy is visible
and amongst us. Unfortunately as long as our
systems remain wedded to linear logic despite
a complete change in the environment we should
expect a falling performance from the conventional
soldier.
- It is now the defender that has to bear the
greatest cost and be responsible for even the
intensity of response.
We need to develop NEW skills that help us resolve
issues within conflict and yet without the need
to declare
a winner! Non Linear Thinking will help.
