- Democracy is an ideology
that was based on linear logic and has
since remained focused on individual rights.
It was assumed that IF the civil liberties of
the individual were maintained, then society
would itself be equalized and free. This has
not happened, specifically where economics and
infrastructure has been deficient!
- The founding fathers had
the abolishment of slavery as their main intent
when writing the tenets of democratic principles.
They had not dreamt that human society would
attempt to use the same charter to equalize
more than a few BILLION persons living in different
circumstances and with different cultural backgrounds.
- The one segment that has
shown CONSISTENT economic and social growth
GLOBALLY within every democracy, is 'CRIME'!!
Terrorism is the new beneficiary because it
has integrated its operations with crime through
commerce.
- Terrorism and crime are able
to thrive specifically because of what they
perceive to be the vulnerability and weakness
of those that live within a successful Democracy.
They are able to exploit the obsessive protection
that is granted within a true Democracy to the
rights of EVERY individual. This has resulted
in TODAY'S PARADOXICAL situation where there
is a greater protection available to the individual,
whose rights now supercede the rights and needs
of society. THIS WAS NOT THE INTENT OF THE FOUNDING
FATHERS!
- While this is our chosen
democratic model based on the theoretically
correct ideology of democracy; we are aware
that the result has been deficient. BUT we are
handicapped by our inability to alter our thought
process IF ANY change affects us in economic
terms.
- 'Economics' has become our first 'unofficial'
BUT 'sub-conscious' measure for democracy.
Economics has come to represent, express and
control almost all democratic values. This now
includes "human values". It
is unfortunate that there is an embarrassment
to admit this fact; as its admission would create
a more transparent methodology for equalization.
This we have seen to be successful in Singapore
and is perhaps the emulation model for China.
- Special interest groups representing ECONOMICS have
thus become controllers of democracy and are
not even expected in anyway to represent the
majority by number JUST THE MAJORITY IN ECONOMIC
TERMS. Therefore any need for Economic change
impairs our willingness to initiate that change.
- THERE IS A DESPERATE NEED for the "re-interpretation
of Democracy & its implementation process";
atleast for the developing world within South
Asia. The very successful implementation of
democracy in the developed world is NO LONGER
RELEVANT AND APPLICABLE FOR SOUTH ASIA IN THE
20TH CENTURY AND BEYOND WHERE THE
NUMBERS, DIVERSITY AND DISPARITY OF CULTURES
REQUIRES A DIFFERENT PROCESS OF IMPLEMENTATION
EVEN IF THE END OBJECTIVE IS THE SAME!!
- Modern systems perceive and
accept Democracy (even if it is deficient) as
long as there is "economic freedom".
It is clear that we perceive (& very correctly)
that economic freedom implies an inevitable
democratic freedom. (If we accept this reality,
we then need to upgrade our definition and give
economics its due place as the MAIN CRITERIA
within the definition of Democracy.)
- It is also necessary to acknowledge
that there is a rapidly rising and unsustainable
economic cost for maintaining the traditional
model of Democracy as per its charter and definition
that is focused on the INDIVIDUAL.
- We in Asia cannot afford this cost and as long as we
attempt to EMULATE THE WESTERN MODEL of democracy
and the same evaluation criteria we are destined
to have WEAK democracies. Modern Democracy is
not a static state IT REQUIRES a continuous
economic investment to maintain it.
Creating a democracy is therefore no
longer as critical as maintaining it.
- One of the consistent indicators
of a thriving Democracy is the "increase
in the disparity of income within the constituents".
A reducing percentage always control the majority
of the wealth and infrastructure that is added
to the economy. While in developing countries
this is considered to be the result of healthy
competition, within the developing economies
it becomes a vicious cycle!!
- While it would be blasphemous
to consider or ask for a change in the Principles
of Democracy specifically in America or the
developed economies. For Asia, South Asia, the
evaluation parameters must be changed/redefined
as per the economic conditions of that country,.
While India has in 50 years of Independence
established a strong Democracy; it has not been
able to provide equal opportunity to the majority.
- In NLT, we therefore refer
to this as 'the need to enlarge the scope
and hasten the benefits from Democracy'.
We require to identify milestones, as stages
within the process of democratization, which
would be based on the pace of economic development
and infrastructure growth.
THE RE-INTERPRETATION
AND ENLARGEMENT REQUIRED AND THE TENETS TO BE
INCORPORATED -
- 'Economic freedom must
precede individual freedom'. We have witnessed
almost everywhere that those from economically
weaker sections, are usually exploited within
a Democracy and within free market economics.
The fortunate few remain more equal than the
majority.
- THUS, NLT would help us understand
that "granting civil rights to individuals
within poverty and a deficient infrastructure
is a travesty".
- In order to have beneficial
DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS, they must be "dynamic"
!! Democratic rights MUST SHIFT (enlarge) IN
FAVOUR OF THE NEXT BIGGER UNIT AND BENEFICIARY.
THE INDIVIDUAL SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RETAIN
RIGHTS OVER SOCIETY. THE LATTER MUST THEN ACCEDE
TO THE RIGHTS OF THE REGION, THEN THE CITY OR
COUNTRY AND SO ON!! We must consider this
to be the 'NEW' definition of Democracy
which does not change its objectives and ideals.
